Lot 62
1800 C-1 R2 VF30. Sharpness EF45 or slightly better but there is some extremely faint roughness on both sides. The microscopic roughness is visible only with the aid of a good glass and is strongest on the upper left part of the obverse and left half of the reverse. No verdigris, and the toning is an attractive uniform medium steel brown and chocolate. The notable marks are a dull nick on the shoulder, a small rim nick under the 8, and a dull scratch just right of the F in OF. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0. The curl left of the date is open from die wear.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1804 C-1 R3 VF20. Sharpness VF30 but there are several light rim bruises on both sides, notably a couple left of the head and one over the M in AMERICA. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and attractive. Glossy light olive and steel with frosty golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. LDS, Manley state 2.0. The die cracks on the reverse are strong and the area at ES-OF is clearly raised.
Estimated Value $150-UP.

1804 C-6 R2 Spiked Chin VF20. Double Struck over Obverse Brockage. Mostly glossy light olive and chocolate brown. Smooth and attractive with only a few trivial contact marks. A tiny rim nick at the A in STATES is a good identifying mark. Double struck. The first strike was an obverse brockage that was centered on the planchet. The second impression was rotated about 5 degrees CCW on the obverse and the doubling is obvious on most of the obverse. The reverse clearly shows the incuse brockage undertype, including an incuse 04 from the date at S-O and parts of LIBERTY at the fraction and ICA. A neat error. EDS, Manley state 1.0. The "Spiked Chin" die flaw is strong.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1805 C-1 R2 Small 5 with Stems EF40. Sharpness AU50 but there are a few small splashes of dark olive toning on both sides. A couple of these dark areas contain traces of extremely fine roughness, including one in the hair under R in LIBERTY and another above the 0 in the date. Otherwise the surfaces are excellent and the toning is an attractive frosty steel brown with reddish tan faded down from mint color in the protected areas. Sharply struck LDS, Manley state 2.0, with a clearly defined cud break in the dentils right of the fraction.

1805 C-3 R4 Small 5 With Stems VG8. Attractive glossy olive brown and chocolate. Looks perfectly smooth to the unaided eye, but a good glass reveals traces of extremely fine roughness in the protected areas. In addition there was a bit of light smoothing done on the cheek, in the hair right of the ribbon, and in the field above the bust tip, but it is difficult to see. This cent has nice eye appeal for the grade, but it would rate a couple more grade points if not for the imperfections. LDS, Manley state 2.0, showing strong swelling in the field before the portrait.

1806 C-4 R1 Large Repunched 6 EF40. Rotated Reverse. Ten points sharper but both sides are coated with a thin layer of lacquer or some similar protectant. Glossy steel brown and chocolate with lustrous golden tan and light brown in protected areas. A coating of lacquer often indicates a coin was retoned, but the color appears natural on this piece and it is quite attractive. Only a few trivial contact marks, including a small depression on the rim off the lower end of the hair ribbon. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0. The repunching on the 6 is clear and the reverse is rotated 35 degrees CW. Might justify a higher grade when the lacquer is removed.

Lot 82
1806 C-4 R1 Large Repunched 6 EF40. Rotated Reverse. Sharpness EF45 or slightly better but there are a few shallow, darkly toned planchet voids on the obverse, as struck. These include one at the ear and another on the lower half of the 6. The only contact marks are some very faint hairline scratches on the neck. Glossy chocolate brown with frosty lighter brown and tan toning faded down from mint color in the protected areas. MDS, Manley state 2.0 early. Much of the repunching on the 6 remains visible and the reverse is rotated 45 degrees CW causing strike weakness on the bust tip and top of the wreath.

Glossy steel and olive brown with frosty lighter steel brown toning in protected areas, especially on the obverse. Nicely struck E-MDS, Manley state 2.0. The dentils are crisp where struck up, the repunching on the second 8 is sharp, and the reverse is rotated 165 degrees CW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation.
